Wrong-way driver caught on Carp Road

CARP – Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) nabbed a young driver on Carp Road following an eastbound cruise on Highway 7 and Highway 417 in the westbound lanes Friday (Aug. 29).

“On Aug. 29, shortly after 4 a.m., officers with the Ottawa Detachment of the OPP responded to a vehicle travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 7 near Ashton Station Road,” OPP media relations officer Const. Dany Viel released in a statement today (Aug. 31). “Officers attempted to stop the vehicle on Highway 7 but were unsuccessful. The vehicle, still going the wrong way, entered Highway 417 and exited at Carp Road.”

Officers were able to safely stop the suspect vehicle on Carp Road just north of Richardson Side Road.

“A police vehicle sustained minor damage, but no injuries are to be reported by officers or the accused,” Viel said.

Justin Robert Somody-Strickland, 25 of Ottawa, was charged with:

  • Dangerous Driving contrary to the Criminal Code
  • Operation of a Motor Vehicle while impaired by alcohol
  • Refuse to comply with a demand
  • Obstructing a peace officer
  • Flight from a peace officer

The accused was released on an undertaking and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa on Sept. 25.

“The Ottawa OPP reminds all motorists to not operate motor vehicles after consuming alcohol or drugs,” Viel said.
