WC dealing with thunderstorm watch, heat warning
WEST CARLETON – While the incredible heat continues in rural west Ottawa, residents are now being asked to be on the lookout for ‘dangerous thunderstorms.’
Environment Canada issues a Severe Thunderstorm Watch this afternoon (July 29) stating “conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing wind gusts up to 90 km/h and torrential rain.”
Environment Canada says these storms will “likely develop this afternoon and evening.”
Very strong wind gusts can damage buildings, down trees and blow large vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.
“Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall,” Environment Canada released in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Heat Warning continues for West Carleton residents as well.
“Daytime
maximum temperatures in the low 30s are expected along with overnight low
temperatures near the 20 degree mark,” Environment Canada said earlier today.
“There may be a respite from the heat in some
areas today as showers or thunderstorms are possible.”
Hot and humid air can also bring “deteriorating air quality and can
cause the Air Quality Health Index to approach the high risk category.”
A cold front is expected to deliver a cooler and less humid
air mass to the area on Tuesday.
