Sled goes through ice in Pakenham Friday, operator escapes

PAKENHAM – One man is lucky to be alive after his snowmobile went through the ice of the Mississippi in Pakenham on Friday (March 1).

According to reports, the driver was not injured and managed to make it to shore unharmed while his machine sunk near the Pakenham Bridge.

Police say it serves as a reminder to snowmobilers to practice caution this time of year when riding the trails. With Spring right around the corner and warmer temperatures in the forecast, the OPP advise snowmobilers to avoid waterways, as ice and snow are melting fast, creating dangerous conditions and unsafe ice.
