Second COVID-19 case at Kanata rec centre

KANATA – A second Kanata Leisure Centre employee has come down with COVID-19.

On Oct. 8 West Carleton Online confirmed a case of COVID-19 with a City of Ottawa employee who worked at the Kanata Leisure Centre.

“We have received confirmation that an employee within the Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department has tested positive for COVID-19,” City of Ottawa Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services manager Dan Clouthier wrote in a memo to city council yesterday (Oct. 13).

The employee was last at work at Kanata Leisure Centre on Oct. 4 and remains asymptomatic.

“Upon receiving news that close contacts had tested positive, the employee followed the advice of Ottawa Public Health and began to self-isolate on Oct. 6,” Clouthier said. “The employee presented for testing on Oct. 12 and a positive test was confirmed on Oct. 13. The individual continues to self-isolate at home. To protect the privacy of the individual, we will not be releasing their name. We are working directly with Ottawa Public Health (OPH) and are conducting contact tracing of individuals who have, or may have been, in close contact with the employee.”

Clouthier says the centre continues to be proactive towards battling COVID-19.

“The Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services department continues to follow enhanced daily cleaning protocols at each of our facilities,” Clouthier said. “These and other proactive changes to our operations have been implemented to allow us to maintain essential services while keeping our staff and clients safe. All of our staff have been instructed to observe physical distancing rules while in the workplace to minimise the spread of germs.”
