Roundabout coming to Richardson and Huntmar
CARP – A new roundabout will replace the four-way stop intersection at Richardson Side and Huntmar roads.
With the growing commercial and residential development in the area including the Tangar Outlets Ottawa, nearby Kanata Centrum Shopping Centre and the growing community of Kanata North, the intersection has become a bottleneck of traffic over the last several years. The former side road has become a popular way in to Kanata for West Carleton residents.
“The work is required to improve traffic flow and to enhance the safety for all road users at or near the intersection of Huntmar Drive and Richardson Side Road,” city staff released in a statement.
The work will involve the construction of a single entry and exit roundabout and include a pedestrian crossing around the intersection that will provide a connection to the paved shoulders of the road. The construction will extend roughly 125 metres down each direction of each road.
Construction is expected to begin any time on the intersection and will be completed by the end of fall.
“Intermittent lane closures can be expected on both Huntmar Drive and Richardson Side Road during non-peak traffic periods,” city staff said. “Traffic control personnel will be onsite directing traffic as required. All turning movements at the Huntmar Drive and Richardson Side Road intersection will b maintained. Cycling and pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction. Access to local businesses and properties will also be maintained.”
The work will be done by West Carleton contractor AECON Construction Ontario East Ltd.
“The contractor will take every precaution to minimize interruptions to the everyday life of your family and/or operation of your business, but, as you can appreciate, there may be some inconvenience during the course of the work, such as traffic delays, parking restrictions, noise, and odour,” city staff said. “We would like to thank you for your patience and co-operation.”
