One dead in early morning blaze

OTTAWA – An occupant has succumbed to injury after being rescued from an early morning fire today (April 3).

Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 911 call at 6:52 a.m. reporting smoky conditions in a bedroom on the third floor at 2011 Boake St. in the Orchardview Avenue and Innes Road area.

“The caller indicated they evacuated the home with another occupant while one remained inside on the fire floor,” OFS public information officer Danielle Cardinal said in a release.

Firefighters from Station 53 in Cumberland were deployed. The first OFS crew on scene did confirm heavy black smoke coming from a vent on the roof and blackened windows in one unit of the row home structure.

“The first priority for firefighters was completing a search and rescuing one occupant,” Cardinal said. “Other crews engaged in a rapid-fire attack. Firefighters located the occupant on the third floor where the fire originated. The person was rapidly removed from the structure and firefighters began resuscitation measures outside of the home.”

The fire was confirmed under control at 7:20 a.m. Adjoining units were protected from the fire spreading and firefighters monitored carbon monoxide levels in those units as a precaution. A loss stopped was recorded at 8:27 a.m. A fire investigator is involved with this incident and the Office of the Fire Marshal is assuming the investigation.

“Our paramedic partners were activated for a number of patients,” Cardinal said. “Notably, the occupant of the home who unfortunately succumb to their injuries, but also for another occupant as well as one firefighter. We would like to thank our partners at the Canadian Red Cross and Salvation Army for assisting those impacted by this fire.”

The OFS would like to take this opportunity to remind residents when the smoke alarm sounds, get out fast. You may have only seconds to escape safely. If you can’t get to someone needing assistance, leave the home and advise the firefighters. Tell dispatchers and/or firefighters where the person is located.
