Man arrested in attempted Beaverbrook smash and grab

KANATA – A man has been arrested after attempting to steal cash and settling for sunglasses and tobacco in a commercial robbery on Teron Road.

“Frontline officers responded to a commercial robbery on the 1000 block of Teron Rd. on Sunday, May 10,” the Ottawa Police Service (OPS) released in a statement today (May 13).

At approximately 3:37 a.m., a man entered a business in the Beaverbrook area and proceeded to a sunglasses display, took two pairs and placed one on his face. He then proceeded behind the cashier counter, asked the clerk to open the cash but the clerk refused.

“The suspect then assaulted the clerk and attempted to open the cashbox without success,” the OPS said. “He then put an undetermined amount of tobacco products in his hoodie and in grocery bags taken from the store before fleeing the scene.”

Responding frontline officers attended but were unable to locate the suspect at the time. The clerk was not injured during the incident.

“The follow-up investigation by the Robbery Unit resulted in the execution of a search warrant and the arrest and charges against Andrew Britt, 28-years-old of Ottawa,” the OPS said.

Britt faces charges of robbery with violence and wearing a disguise with intent. He is scheduled to appear in court today.
