Leap Year sees second fire in WC

DIRLETON – The rare date Feb. 29 was a harbinger of bad luck in West Carleton as firefighters attended to two structure fires throughout the day.

The first fire destroyed a bungalow near Galetta early yesterday morning (Feb. 29). The second fire involved a detached garage on Torbolton Ridge Road near Dirleton around 6:38 p.m.

“Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 911 call from on-site reporting a truck on fire in a detached garage,” OFS public information officer Jen McNeely released in a statement. “A working fire was declared at 6:38 p.m.. Crews remained on scene checking for extension. The structure was unoccupied.”

The fire was declared under control at 7 p.m. A loss stopped was declared at that time.

“There are patients in the care of the Ottawa Paramedic Service,” McNeely said. “An Ottawa Fire Investigator will not be required to attend for this incident.”
