Harbour Days a hot time

FITZROY HARBOUR – It was hot, the beer tent was full, the kids were entertained, and it was another great time at the annual Harbour Days party.

For three days the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre was the place to be no matter how many times you have revolved around the sun.

“The weather was great, and the event was well attended,” Fitzroy Harbour Community Association board member Adam Brown told West Carleton Online today (July 8). “Breakfast was tasty, the magician was a hit and fun was had by all.”

The event kicked off Thursday (July 4) evening with Family Outdoor Bingo and some league ball. The Fitzroy Harbour ladies league hit the diamond at 6:30 p.m. followed by Greater Ottawa Fastball League regular season action with the West Carleton Electric taking on the Ottawa Valley A’s. While both teams are filled with West Carletonites, the Electric calls the Harbour their home and the home team came away with a 13-6 victory. It is only the second win of the season for Electric, while the A’s sit in sixth in the nine-team league with a 4-5 record.

Friday was even more action packed with the start of the popular three-pitch tournament; Pong’s Food Truck serving up poutine, the Kids Bike Parade, the Amazing Race Fitzroy Edition and live music by Hashtag.

Saturday was a day for burning away all those Friday night calories. The sixth annual Choose 2 Live five-kilometre race, beach volleyball, washers and the conclusion of the three-pitch tournament. The Kids Fun Fair was open and for those who didn’t get enough poutine the night before, they could get their fill of food at the Firefighters’ Breakfast and, following that, a barbecue hosted by St. George’s Anglican Church. The annual washers tournament was won by Clayton Barr and Joe Muise.

Sixteen teams participated in this year’s three-pitch tourney and Jenna Craig’s team was named champion following the final game against Dan Armstrong’s team.

Not only was the ball tournament a blast, it was also a fundraiser. Brown reports $1,000 was raised and donated to the Engelberts’ family fund.

“The FHCA would like to thank all the volunteers who did a lot of work to ensure the event was a success,” Brown said. “We’d also like to thank Campbell Fuels for their sponsorship.”
