Founder of Cavanagh Construction passes
WEST CARLETON – The founder of Thomas Cavanagh Construction has passed away. Thomas J. Cavanagh died Thursday, Dec. 5 peacefully and surrounded by family and loved ones.
More than 65 years ago Cavanagh founded the construction company that bares his name. The construction company, based out of Ashton, was well known throughout the Ottawa Valley and nation’s capital for not only the construction projects, but community involvement as well.
“Tom spoke fast, drove fast, and lived fast,” family members wrote in his obituary. “He was generous to a fault. Tom gave freely and without hesitation whenever he saw a need.”
Starting with a single dump truck in 1953, he grew his company to more than 800 employees, “whom he considered his extended family.”
The company also owns more than 500 pieces of heavy equipment and 42 licenses pits and quarries.
“Tom was proud of the many people and their families that made their livelihoods with Cavanagh Construction,” his family said.
Tom was married to Kay (nee Coyles) for 63 years and the couple had three children Cindy, Lori and Jeff.
“Tom loved NASCAR and country music and for fun he worked,” family wrote.
Tom was also an active community leader donating funds and services to many community projects and events. His family will continue that community contribution with the creation of a charitable foundation.
“To honour his legacy and ensure that his gift of giving is everlasting, a foundation is being established in his memory,” his family said. “For those of you that wish to honour him with a donation, please consider donating to the Thomas Cavanagh Foundation, continuing his commitment to community giving.”
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11 at Beckwith Park (1319 9th Line, Beckwith).
“Tom would disapprove however the services will be held on a work day,” the family wrote. “Please join us in celebrating this one of a kind man at his farewell party.”
