“It is with great sorrow that I share the unexpected passing of former Mayor Shaun McLaughlin on Sunday Feb. 16 while vacationing in Mexico,” Mississippi Mills Mayor Christy Lowry released in a statement today (Feb. 17). “Council and staff are shocked and saddened by the former mayor‘s passing. We are keeping his wife, Amelia, and the family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Flags at Mississippi Mills municipal buildings have been and will remain lowered for the next four days in honour of the former mayor.

McLaughlin was a strong supporter of the arts, culture, libraries and as mayor was a committed proponent of long-term financial planning. McLaughlin was a champion of the Lanark County Food Bank and after his retirement from municipal politics he became the ambassador of the Great Veggie Grow Off program.

Before being elected mayor, McLaughlin served as a Ramsay Township councillor and covered municipal matters in both the local newspaper and active blogging.

“Shaun was an eloquent writer,” Lowry said. “His love for Mississippi Mills, its natural beauty and his pride for our community was palpable.”

Lowry says a book of condolences, which will be shared with Amelia, will be available to sign starting tomorrow at the Municipal Office located at 3131 Old Perth Road in Almonte.
