Fitzroy Winter Carnival frosty hit

FITZROY HARBOUR – The annual Fitzroy Winter Carnival hits all the right notes with indoor and outdoor fun, tests of strength and of the mind, and of course, lots of food.

The carnival ran Thursday, Feb. 20 to Saturday, Feb. 22 and had lots for everybody to do.

Thursday night kicked off with chili and the annual Country versus City Pond Hockey Game – a fierce rivalry featuring City of Ottawa staffers versus a team of Harbour boys. Harbour resident and City of Ottawa staffer Adam Brown could easily have played for either team.

“A tad chilly but lots of fun,” Brown told West Carleton Online last week. “No score kept in the hockey game. Though the city workers are claiming victory under the ‘last goal wins’ provisions of Fitzroy shinny. Fun, it was. A tad cold but a good time was had by all.”

Friday night was billed as Family Fun Night with a skating party and outdoor bonfire. Inside was Dan and Carole’s Trivia Night. The 23rd annual event is one of the most popular events at the carnival and this year 102 competitors took part.

Saturday morning breakfast was hosted by the Arnprior Wrestling Club. The club is coached and organized by Fitzroy Harbour’s Kevin Mayhew. Outside, the West Carleton Outdoor Hockey League held their full slate of regular season games at the Harbour ODR.

Saturday afternoon was a time for shinny and other outdoor games while Wilson and Declourt provided live music indoors.
