Firefighters hit WC blaze on way back from Munster fire

CARP – Ottawa firefighter finishing up work at a Munster Fire, joined firefighters in the Carp area to battle a mid-morning blaze involving another barn structure.

“Ottawa Fire Services (OFS) received a 911 call at 10:43 a.m. reporting flames and smoke coming from a garage-type structure in the area of Vaughan Side Road and Thermotech Road near the Carp portion of highway 417,” OFS public information officer Danielle Cardinal released in a statement this afternoon (April 23).  “Another 911 caller indicated that a barn was on fire on Shanna Road.”

It was the second rural west out-building fire Ottawa firefighters battled today (April 23).

The first OFS crew on scene, responding from Station 64 in Carp, confirmed visible flames and a working fire was declared at 10:50 a.m.

Items in the large storage shed were still accessible in the early stages of the blaze. A tractor was removed, and fire staff assisted in removing a pickup truck from the structure.

“Persons and two horses on the property were luckily not inside the building,” Cardinal said. “Crews that were being released from the Franktown fire were sent to this fire scene as water shuttles were also required in this rural area.”

The fire was confirmed under control at 11:16 a.m. The tractor on scene and later a backhoe were used to disperse the burning hay while firefighters used water.

“This tactic allows for better access to the burning remains of the shed as well as better saturation with water to extinguish the hay,” Cardinal said. “A loss stopped was confirmed at 12:50 p.m.”

A fire investigator is involved with this incident.

“Thank you to our partners at Ottawa Police Services and the Ottawa Paramedic Services for helping with scene safety,” Cardinal said. “You are an essential part of the ‘anatomy of a fire scene’ and we are thankful for your support. Lastly, thank you to the bystanders who stopped their vehicles and contacted 911 when they spotted these emergencies. Their information was critical in ensuring the right resources were sent to these emergencies. When calling 911 please ensure you are calling from a safe place and that you remain on the line until told to hand up.”
