Deadly snowmobile season claims 13 lives

ONTARIO – Despite constant reminders to stay safe, 13 Ontarians were killed in snowmobile collisions this winer.

The Ontario Provincial Police continue to push the safety message as what has turned out to be a deadly snowmobiling season winds down.

Over the 2018/2019 season, provincial police say 13 people lost their lives as a result of 11 fatal collisions.

Two incidents took place at the end of March as snowmobilers try to get in their last few rides. In one case, a rider was traveling too fast on unsafe ice and suddenly came across open water.

The OPP says the other fatal collision was a result of water skipping or puddle jumping, where riders travel over open water in hopes of making it to the other side.

Police say with warmer weather, conditions on the trails will continue to deteriorate daily and are advising people to stay off the ice.
