Concerts in the Park series finale July 25

FITZROY HARBOUR – It’s been another great July of music in Fitzroy Provincial Park.

The Concerts in the Park series has had a great 24th year, bringing popular, local musicians and fundraising barbecues to the beautiful outdoor setting of Fitzroy Provincial Park.

Last Thursday was no different as Big Newton had the kids dancing in the grass, and even singing on stage. The four-piece band highlighted with a saxophone brought their ‘70s and ‘80s arena rock sound to the Fitzroy stage.

They also brought a young singer to the stage. Frontman and saxophone player Dave Rama spent one song performing off the stage and on the grass with some of the younger concertgoers. While speaking with them, one young J.J. Craig, 6, mentioned he could sing too.

When Rama returned to the stage, he invited J.J. up for an impromptu performance with the band.

For J.J.’s musical debut, he performed Elton John’s I’m Still Standing, with some attempted accompaniment by Big Newton, which had some difficulty matching J.J.’s tempo. Despite the challenge, J.J. and the band received huge applause from the audience.

West Carleton Online caught up with J.J. very briefly following his performance.

“It was great,” J.J. said before running off to play with his friends.

Thursday, July 25 closes the series sponsored by Coun. Eli El-Chantiry and Waste Management. Crowd-pleasers Ambush take the stage (as they have for many years now) at 7 p.m. There will be a barbecue available that starts at 6 p.m. All proceeds of the barbecue go to the youth group cooking the food. The concerts are free, but they are also fundraisers for CHEO and the Corkery Community Association.
