Community raises funds for Woodlawn family who lost two homes
WOODLAWN – More than $35,000 has been raised in less than 24 hours for a young family that has lost two homes, a beloved family pet, and all their possessions (twice), in less than two years.
Kyle and Jenna Burke and their two young children Bentley, 8, and Emma, 5, lost their home, their beloved dog Mason, and all their possessions in a 2019 fire. Three days ago, the same tragedy struck the Burke’s again as the family lost their newly finished home to another fire.
Family friends have worked together to create a Gofundme page in hope of helping the Burke family recover from a devastating fire for the second time in one-and-a-half years.
A family friend reached out to West Carleton Online today (Feb. 22) to bring our attention to the fundraiser.
“We are in contact with the family daily,” the individual who requested anonymity told West Carleton Online. “I know they are struggling with having to relive this tragedy.”
The Burke family politely declined to speak with West Carleton Online at this time.
“They are trying to focus on their recovery,” the family friend said. “It’s hard to believe this happened twice to such a wonderful family.”
It is a tragedy that has struck a chord with the community. In lest than 18 hours, 235 donations have raised $35,930.
“Our hope is this Gofundme page will help support them in any way they need,” the fundraiser organizers wrote on the page. “From personal belongings to bill payments to services and fees. The hard truth is the second time around is going to be much more challenging, with a lot of uncertainties. With any loss, we all know the best way to get through it is with the support of friends, family and community. With everyone’s donations, we hope to reduce their stress and give them some reassurance that they will get through this, once again.”
