Back-to-back big COVID-19 numbers in Ottawa

OTTAWA – Ottawa Public Health (OPH) is reporting 52 more cases of COVID-19 in the city today (Sept. 15).

It’s another large number for the second day in a row after 60 new cases, the most since May, were reported yesterday.

Ottawa’s West End Villa long-term care home is reporting five of its residents have died due to complications related to COVID-19.

As of Monday (Sept. 14), OPH had reported 28 resident cases, five staff cases and one resident death due to COVID-19 at the facility since August 30.

“We have been in contact with the families of these residents and offer them our condolences in this difficult time,” villa administrator Kelly Keller said. “All families with loved ones at Extendicare West End Villa have also been informed.”

This comes in addition to four more deaths reported Tuesday at the Extendicare West End Villa long term care home.

There have now been 272 deaths linked to the virus in Ottawa since March.

OPH says there are currently 19 institutions dealing with outbreaks.

The health unit counts 362 active cases of COVID-19 in the city, but says hospitalizations are down to nine and no one is in intensive care.

Overall, there have been 3,335 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ottawa since the beginning of the pandemic – 2,753 (81.3 per cent) of which have been resolved.
