Gahan House Announces Winners of Maritime Home Brew Challenge 2020
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Maritime brewpub chain The Gahan House has announced the winners of the 2020 edition of its competition that offers homebrewers in the region the chance to brew and release a commercial batch of their beer recipe.
The Maritime Home Brew Challenge started in 2014 as a PEI-only competition at the original Charlottetown location of Gahan House, and expanded in 2018 to welcome entries from homebrewers in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick as well.
Two styles were accepted for this year’s competition – West Coast IPA and New England IPA – and the winners were announced online over the weekend.
West Coast IPA winners:
1st Place – Isolation Ale by Mike Digdon
2nd Place – Riptide by Patrick Hogan
3rd Place – Electric Pine IPA by Kevin Sweezey
4th Place – Hoptastic Voyage by Jeramy Slaunwhite
5th Place – Orange Ya Glad We Made This Beer? by Brendan Beerman & Aidan Blanchard
New England IPA winners:
1st Place – Hazy McHazeface by Trevor McLean
2nd Place – Stunner Jones by Julien Belliveau
3rd Place – Haaaaaaze by Eric Gautier
4th Place – Atlantic Bubbles by Justin Clarke & Eric Gautier
5th Place – Juicy Cloudburst by Matthew Doucette
Other awards:
Best Name – Maritime Fog by Paul MacKinnon
Best Use of Local Ingredients – Hoptastic Voyage by Jeramy Slaunwhite
The Grand Champion beer of the competition was Trevor McLean’s Hazy McHazeface, which will be brewed for a commercial canned release next year via PEI Brewing and Gahan House.
